Introduction, styling
There was a period when Ford was hugely popular here in Singapore, thanks to the two Mazda derived, Japanese made Laser and Telstar models. The Blue Oval hasn't been so popular since the demise of these models, which is a bit of a mystery to me since it offers really good cars like the Mondeo, Fiesta and Focus. After all, the brand is extremely popular in Europe, with the Fiesta even taking top spot in the UK sales charts in recent times.
While the Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus and S-Max all showed off Ford's brilliance, models like the mediocre Escape compact SUV didn't exactly help the brand and its image. Thankfully, the American developed, Japanese made Escape is now history and in its place within Ford's local range is the European developed, German made Kuga compact crossover SUV.
The Kuga, based on the Focus platform, was introduced to European markets way back in 2008 but it only found its way here recently. It is Ford Europe's first proper compact crossover SUV model and competes with European models like the Volkswagen Tiguan as well as popular Japanese ones like range topping Honda CR-Vs and the Mazda CX-7 among others.
In terms of styling, the Kuga embodies Ford's current Kinetic Design language that we first saw on the Mondeo and S-Max. Up front, the Kuga's resemblance to its stable mates are pretty obvious thanks to the trapezoidal grille on the bumper, narrow upper grille, the swept back headlamps as well as the twin power domes on the bonnet. Along the flanks, the Kuga shows off its muscularity thanks to its well-defined lines and generously proportioned wheel arches. The latter's size means that the standard 18-inch wheels still look undersized and a tad small for the Kuga's proportions.
The Kuga isn't exactly the prettiest compact crossover SUV around but it certainly looks more distinctive than its closest rival, the Volkswagen Tiguan.
